Domainers - How to get to where you want to be

Domaining is hard.

If you don’t put in the hours you are not going to make it. Even if you have deep pockets, that is still not enough to guarantee success - you need the skills, expereince and industry knowledge to have a chance of ‘making it’.

At the moment I am reading Jack Canfield’s book How To Get From Where You Are To Where You Want To Be - The 25 Principles of Success. Although the book has absolutely nothing to do with domain names, the book has a lot of sound advice to support and inspire domainers.

Of the 25 success principles stated in this book, its hard to identify which ones would be most helpful - they are all great - but the five below really struck a chord with me:-

Principle 3 - Decide What You Really Want

You need to decide what success means for you. What things you posess and how you will live your life when you are successful and recognise that you can get them through domaining. When the going gets tough these are the things that will keep you going.

Principle 7 - Unleash the Power of Goal Setting

Successful domainers set goals. They know how they want to progress. Goals in this sense are detailed and time limited - specific goals that include a date when they will be accomplished. If you don’t know where you want to be, how will you know if you have got there!

Principle 8 - Chunk it Down

No one achieved all of their goals overnight. It is best to split them into manageable steps and conquer each in turn.

Principle 13 - Take Action

All the planning in the world will be wasted if you don’t start delivering the actions on your action plan. If you plan to be a success in domaining you need a plan to get there, but planning is not enough - you need to begin to put your plan into action.

Principle 15 - Ask! Ask! Ask!

Think of the difference if you simply ask for what you want. What this means is that if you are negotiating for that domain name, for example, ask for the sum you want, or ask for the deal you need or ask for help when you need it. I’m not saying you will always get what you ask for - far from it - but if you never ask for what you want you will never, ever, get it! Get it?

These are five great principles and Jack Canfield’s book How To Get From Where You Are To Where You Want To Be - The 25 Principles of Success, has many more. Canfield has an interesting history. His first break was through working with self made millionnaire, W. Clement Stone. Stone had previously co-authored, with Napoleon Hill, Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude. Hill was an internationally renowned author in his own right and the author of the world famous book, one that should be in every domainer’s bookcase, Think and Grow Rich. Canfield later became famous, worldwide, with his ’Chicken Soup of the Soul’ series of books. While the ‘Chicken Soup’ series was not to my liking, by all accounts this made him and his co-author Mark Victor Hansen very wealthy men indeed.

Its worth noting that this particular book is published for the UK. However the larger and confusingly similar titled The Success Principles: How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be is available in both the UK and US, with most of the principles in the UK publication, plus many more.
